# Cohort retention

See how many identified visitors from each week's cohort come back in later weeks.

## What a cohort is

A cohort is everyone identified for the first time in a given week. The Cohorts page groups your identified visitors by that entry week, then shows how many of them came back in each of the following 12 weeks.

Weeks bucket Monday to Monday, in UTC.

## It needs an identity

Cohorts only track identified visitors, not anonymous sessions. Call identify(userId) from the snippet to give a visitor a stable identity across sessions. See [Visitors](/docs/visitors) for what identifying a visitor does elsewhere in the dashboard.

Until you call identify() at least once, the Cohorts page has nothing to group.

## Choosing what counts as "return"

By default, a cohort counts any identified session in a later week as a return. You can narrow that to a specific event name instead, so a return only counts if the visitor triggered that event, not just any session.

## The 12-week window

Cohorts only look at identified users active in the last 12 weeks. It's a rolling window, not your full account history. A user who first showed up 20 weeks ago no longer appears in a fresh cohort, even if they're still active.
